The Indian government has denied any role in former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s virtual media event scheduled for August 5. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified today that this event is being organised by a private media organisation.
Jaiswal stated that the government has nothing to do with this event. Additionally, the Indian government does not endorse any views that may be expressed on this platform.
Bangladesh had appealed to India
This statement comes a day after Bangladesh sought cooperation from India. Bangladesh had appealed that Sheikh Hasina or anyone associated with banned organisations should not be allowed to use Indian soil for delivering political speeches or conducting activities that spread instability in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir had raised this issue during a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka on Monday.
Information given on BRICS Summit invitation
On a question asked about the BRICS Summit to be held in early September, Randhir Jaiswal said that New Delhi had sent a formal invitation to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for a bilateral visit to India after he assumed office in February 2026.
Jaiswal informed that regarding the BRICS Summit, India has separately invited the Bangladeshi Prime Minister to participate in the outreach session of the 18th BRICS Summit to be held in New Delhi in his capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC.
He said that this invitation has been extended in accordance with the standard procedure followed for outreach sessions in BRICS. Similarly, heads of other regional groups have also been invited.
