A Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah made an emergency landing at Chennai Airport on Monday evening. This step was taken after receiving reports of a technical glitch in the aircraft’s engine number 2.
There were 186 people on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH156. A full emergency was declared at Chennai Airport at 4:07 PM. A senior airport official told NDTV, “The landing was smooth. All passengers are safe.”
According to an official statement from Chennai Airport, the flight was diverted to Chennai after engine number 2 failed. The aircraft was an Airbus A330-200 with registration number 9M-MTY.
The flight was scheduled to arrive in Chennai at 4:40 PM, but it landed at 4:44 PM. It was parked at Bay 45. All emergency response preparations at the airport had been activated.
Inspection of the aircraft and engine
The airport stated that Malaysia Airlines and the relevant technical teams are investigating the aircraft and the technical issue. The exact nature of the engine failure is not yet known.
There are no reports of any injuries among the 186 people on board the aircraft. Further information is also awaited regarding how the passengers will be sent on their onward journey.
